The market for dialysis catheters and tubing in Belgium is largely influenced by the high incidence of chronic kidney disease and an increasing elderly population. Although national guidelines recommend arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) as the preferred option for long-term dialysis access, central venous catheters (CVCs) continue to play a vital role in patient care, particularly for newcomers to dialysis and those for whom AVFs are not a feasible option. This reliance on CVCs is further supported by patient preferences, with recent research indicating that 42–44% of patients in Belgium favor catheters. This preference is particularly pronounced among the growing demographic of older and more vulnerable patients, for whom establishing a functional AVF can be challenging. A study conducted in May 2025 revealed considerable discrepancies in CVC usage among various medical centers, ranging from 27.6% to 94.4%, highlighting the influence of patient characteristics and varying clinical practices. Additionally, the high incidence of complications associated with catheters, such as infections and thrombosis, drives the demand for more advanced and safer catheter products. In summary, the Belgian dialysis catheter market is shaped by the practical difficulties of managing vascular access for an expanding and aging patient population, underscoring the necessity for dependable and safe catheter solutions to ensure effective dialysis treatment.
